Completion of a normed space
Builds on Normed vector spaceBanach spaceLinear isometryDense set
Definition
Let be a normed vector space over or . A completion of is a pair such that:
- is a Banach space over the same field.
- is a linear isometry, that is, is linear and for all .
- The image is dense in .
Remarks
Every normed space has a completion: take the Cauchy sequences in modulo the sequences that tend to , with , and the constant sequence. Any two completions and are related by a unique isometric isomorphism with . Example: let be the space of real polynomial functions on with the sup norm, and let be the inclusion of in . Clauses 1 and 2 hold, and clause 3 holds by the Weierstrass approximation theorem, so is the completion of . Non-example: the inclusion of the finitely supported sequences , with the sup norm, into satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but not 3. The reason is that the closure of in is the space of null sequences. That closure, , is the completion of . As a metric space, is the completion of the metric space , with the vector operations extended by continuity.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
