Definition
Let be a simply connected open set, with . Let be a velocity field on that is incompressible, , and irrotational, . Then there are a velocity potential and a stream function on with The complex potential of the flow is the function . It is holomorphic, and its derivative is the complex conjugate of the velocity:
Remarks
The equations and are the Cauchy–Riemann equations, which is why is holomorphic. Then . Conversely, every holomorphic on is the complex potential of a plane incompressible irrotational flow, with velocity . The potentials are determined up to additive constants.
Example: has and . Then , so , the stagnation point flow, and indeed and .
Non-example: the rigid rotation has , so it has no complex potential. Indeed , which is not a holomorphic function of .
On a domain that is not simply connected, such as , the complex potential can be multivalued; the point vortex has .
