Definition
A concrete category is a pair where is a category and is a faithful functor to the category of sets and functions. The functor is the forgetful functor, and is the underlying set of . A category is concretizable if such a faithful functor exists.
Remarks
Example: the category of groups with the functor sending a group to its underlying set is concrete. Two homomorphisms with the same underlying function are equal, so is faithful. Non-example: the pair (groups, ), where sends every group to a one-point set, is not a concrete category. The homomorphisms and of are different but have the same image under , so is not faithful. Every small category is concretizable. Send to the set of all morphisms with codomain , and to the map . This functor is faithful, since is the image of .
