Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold. A conformal compactification of (M,g)(M, g) consists of a Lorentzian manifold (M~,g~)(\tilde M, \tilde g), an open embedding ψ ⁣:M→M~\psi \colon M \to \tilde M with ψ(M)‾\overline{\psi(M)} compact, and a smooth function Ω ⁣:M~→ℝ\Omega \colon \tilde M \to \R such that

  1. Ω>0\Omega > 0 on ψ(M)\psi(M) and g~=Ω2(ψ−1)∗g\tilde g = \Omega^2 (\psi^{-1})^* g on ψ(M)\psi(M), so ψ\psi is a conformal map;
  2. Ω=0\Omega = 0 on the boundary ∂ψ(M)\partial \psi(M) of ψ(M)\psi(M) in M~\tilde M.

The boundary ∂ψ(M)\partial \psi(M) is the conformal boundary of MM. Assume (M,g)(M, g) is spherically symmetric. A Penrose diagram of MM is a plane drawing of the two-dimensional quotient ψ(M)‾/SO(3)\overline{\psi(M)} / SO(3). Its coordinates are chosen so that radial null curves are straight lines at ±45°\pm 45°.

Remarks

Since g~\tilde g and gg differ by a positive factor on ψ(M)\psi(M), they have the same light cones there, so the compactification keeps the causal structure of MM.

Example: for Minkowski space with ds2=−dt2+dr2+r2dΩ2ds^2 = -dt^2 + dr^2 + r^2 d\Omega^2, set U=arctan⁡(t−r)U = \arctan(t - r) and V=arctan⁡(t+r)V = \arctan(t + r), so −π/2<U≤V<π/2-\pi/2 < U \le V < \pi/2. A direct computation gives ds2=14cos⁡2Ucos⁡2V(−4 dU dV+sin⁡2(V−U) dΩ2).ds^2 = \frac{1}{4\cos^2 U \cos^2 V} \left( -4\, dU\, dV + \sin^2(V - U)\, d\Omega^2 \right). With Ω=2cos⁡Ucos⁡V\Omega = 2 \cos U \cos V, the metric g~=Ω2g\tilde g = \Omega^2 g is, with T=V+UT = V + U and R=V−UR = V - U, the metric −dT2+dR2+sin⁡2R dΩ2-dT^2 + dR^2 + \sin^2 R \, d\Omega^2 of the Einstein static universe ℝ×S3\R \times S^3. Minkowski space becomes the region ∣T∣+R<π\abs{T} + R < \pi, R≥0R \ge 0, and its Penrose diagram is a triangle. Its boundary consists of future and past null infinity ℐ±\mathscr{I}^\pm (where V=π/2V = \pi/2, resp. U=−π/2U = -\pi/2), spatial infinity i0i^0 and future and past timelike infinity i±i^\pm.

Non-example: the identity map of Minkowski space onto itself, with Ω=1\Omega = 1, satisfies clause 1, but ψ(M)‾=M\overline{\psi(M)} = M is not compact, so it is not a conformal compactification.
