Relativity and gravitational theory Definition
Conformal gravity
Definition
Let be a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and let be the Weyl tensor of . Conformal gravity (Weyl gravity) is the theory of the metric with the action where is a dimensionless coupling constant. Its field equations, obtained by varying , say that the Bach tensor vanishes, where is the Ricci tensor.
Remarks
The action is invariant under the Weyl rescaling for every smooth positive function on . Indeed is unchanged, is multiplied by , and is multiplied by in four dimensions. Example: every Einstein metric, with , solves , and so does every metric conformal to an Einstein metric. Non-example: in dimension the same integral is not Weyl invariant, since then scales by , which does not cancel . The theory belongs to conformal geometry: it depends only on the conformal class of .
