Conjugate points
Builds on Riemannian manifoldGeodesicJacobi field
Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold, let be a geodesic, and let in . The points and are conjugate along if there is a Jacobi field along , not identically zero, with and . The multiplicity of the pair is the dimension of the space of such Jacobi fields.
Remarks
Example: on the unit sphere , let be a unit-speed great circle and a parallel unit field normal to . The Jacobi field vanishes at and , so and , which are antipodal, are conjugate; there are independent choices of , so the multiplicity is .
Non-example: in with the Euclidean metric, the Jacobi fields along are with constant vectors . Such a field vanishing at two times is zero, so no two points are conjugate.
Equivalently, with and , the point is conjugate to along if and only if the differential of the exponential map is singular at . The multiplicity is at most , where .
