Exponential map

Summary

Let pp be a point of a Riemannian manifold. The exponential map at pp sends v∈TpMv \in T_pM to the point reached at time 11 by the geodesic from pp with velocity vv. It maps a small ball around 00 in the tangent space diffeomorphically onto a neighbourhood of pp. So it gives coordinates adapted to the geometry, the normal coordinates. It is central to the study of completeness, conjugate points and the cut locus. For a bi-invariant metric on a Lie group, it agrees at the identity with the exponential map of the Lie group.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
