Differential geometry Definition
Exponential map
Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold and . For in the tangent space , let be the maximal geodesic with and . Let be the set of such that is defined on an interval containing . The exponential map at is
Remarks
Example: in with the Euclidean metric, , so and .
Non-example: in the punctured plane with and , the geodesic hits the removed origin at . So , and is not defined.
The set is open and star-shaped about , and is smooth on it. By rescaling, . The differential of at is the identity of . So, by the inverse function theorem, maps a neighbourhood of diffeomorphically onto a neighbourhood of .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
