Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold of dimension and . Let be an open neighbourhood of , star-shaped about . Assume that the exponential map restricts to a diffeomorphism from onto an open set . Let be an orthonormal basis of for , and let be . The normal coordinates centred at are the chart
Remarks
Example: in with the Euclidean metric and the standard basis, , so the normal coordinates centred at are , defined on all of .
Non-example: in with the Euclidean metric, the chart has the form only for the basis , where is the standard basis. This basis is orthogonal but not orthonormal, so is not a normal coordinate chart; indeed, in the metric has matrix at , not .
In normal coordinates centred at : , and . The geodesics through are the lines in these coordinates. Different orthonormal bases give normal coordinates that differ by an orthogonal matrix.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
