Definition
Let be a complete connected Riemannian manifold with Riemannian distance , and let . For a unit vector , let be the unit-speed geodesic from in direction , using the exponential map, and let If , the point is the cut point of along . The cut locus of is the set of all cut points of , over all unit vectors .
Remarks
Example: on the unit sphere , every unit-speed geodesic from is a great circle with for and just after . So for every , and the cut locus of is the single point .
Non-example: in with the Euclidean metric, for all , so for all , there are no cut points, and the cut locus is empty.
Let be the cut point of along . Then is the first point conjugate to along , or there are two distinct minimizing geodesics from to , or both. The cut locus is a closed set of measure zero, and maps the open star-shaped set diffeomorphically onto minus the cut locus of .
