Definition
Let be a property of real or complex sequences . The property is a convergence test if every series whose terms have is convergent. It is a divergence test if every series whose terms have is divergent.
Remarks
Example: the property "there are and with for all " is a convergence test. Indeed for , and the comparison test with a geometric series gives convergence. Non-example: the property "" is not a convergence test. The terms of the harmonic series tend to , but the series diverges. Its negation "" is a divergence test. A test is inconclusive on a series when the series has neither the property of the test nor the property of its companion divergence test.
