Converse

Definition

Let pp and qq be propositions. The converse of the implication p→qp \to q is the implication q→pq \to p.

Remarks

An implication and its converse are not logically equivalent. For example, "if n=2n = 2, then nn is prime" is true, but its converse "if nn is prime, then n=2n = 2" is false. The inverse of p→qp \to q is ¬p→¬q\neg p \to \neg q. It is the contrapositive of the converse.

Explanations

L1 human

The converse reads the arrow backwards. "If an animal is a dog, then it is a mammal" is true. Its converse, "if an animal is a mammal, then it is a dog", is false.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
