Definition
Let be a category and let be a family of objects of indexed by a set . A coproduct of the family is an object with morphisms for , called injections, with the following property. For every object and every family of morphisms , there is exactly one morphism with for all . The object is written , or for two objects, and is written .
Remarks
A coproduct is the colimit of the diagram whose shape is the set with only identity morphisms, and it is a product in the opposite category. The coproduct of the empty family is an initial object.
Example: in the category of abelian groups, the direct sum with and is a coproduct. Given homomorphisms and , the map is a homomorphism because is abelian, it satisfies and , and it is forced since . In the category of sets the coproduct is the disjoint union, and in the category of groups it is the free product.
Non-example: in the category of fields, and have no coproduct, since no field receives homomorphisms from both: a field homomorphism preserves the characteristic.
