Definition

Let a lattice model on the square lattice have spins in a finite set SS and nearest-neighbour Boltzmann weights. Let Λ\Lambda be the square of side 2m+12m + 1 centred at the origin, with fixed spins on its outer boundary. The horizontal and vertical lines through the origin cut Λ\Lambda into four quadrants. Take the lower right quadrant. Let σ=(σ0,…,σm)\sigma = (\sigma_0, \dots, \sigma_m) be the spins on the half-row from the origin to the right edge. Let σ′=(σ0′,…,σm′)\sigma' = (\sigma'_0, \dots, \sigma'_m) be the spins on the half-column from the origin to the bottom edge. The corner transfer matrix AA is the matrix indexed by Sm+1×Sm+1S^{m+1} \times S^{m+1} defined as follows. Its entry Aσ,σ′A_{\sigma, \sigma'} is 00 if σ0≠σ0′\sigma_0 \ne \sigma'_0. Otherwise it is the sum, over all spins strictly inside the quadrant, of the product of the Boltzmann weights of the quadrant. The corner transfer matrices BB, CC, DD of the other three quadrants are defined in the same way, going around the origin.

Remarks

The partition function of Λ\Lambda is Z=tr⁡(ABCD)Z = \tr(ABCD), with the weights on the two cutting lines shared so that each is counted once. For a function gg of the centre spin, the expectation is ⟨g(σ0)⟩=tr⁡(G ABCD)/tr⁡(ABCD)\langle g(\sigma_0) \rangle = \tr(G \, ABCD) / \tr(ABCD), where GG is the diagonal matrix with entries g(σ0)g(\sigma_0). For an isotropic model with a reflection symmetry, all four matrices can be taken equal, and Z=tr⁡(A4)Z = \tr(A^4). For the Ising model, S={−1,+1}S = \set{-1, +1} and each corner transfer matrix has size 2m+1×2m+12^{m+1} \times 2^{m+1}, with nonnegative entries. Baxter studied models whose weights satisfy the star–triangle relation. For them the corner transfer matrices become simple as m→∞m \to \infty. Suitably normalized, their eigenvalues are integer powers of one number that depends on the spectral parameter. Non-example: the row transfer matrix of the same model is not a corner transfer matrix. It is indexed by the spins of whole rows and builds the region row by row, not quadrant by quadrant.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
