Definition

Let Φ\Phi be a root system in a Euclidean space EE with inner product (⋅,⋅)(\cdot, \cdot). The coroot of a root α∈Φ\alpha \in \Phi is the vector α∨=2α(α,α)∈E.\alpha^\vee = \frac{2\alpha}{(\alpha, \alpha)} \in E. The set Φ∨={α∨:α∈Φ}\Phi^\vee = \set{\alpha^\vee : \alpha \in \Phi} is the set of coroots.

Remarks

With this notation ⟨β,α⟩=(β,α∨)\langle \beta, \alpha \rangle = (\beta, \alpha^\vee), and the reflection in the hyperplane orthogonal to α\alpha is sα(x)=x−(x,α∨)αs_\alpha(x) = x - (x, \alpha^\vee) \alpha. Example: in B2={±e1,±e2,±e1±e2}B_2 = \set{\pm e_1, \pm e_2, \pm e_1 \pm e_2} in ℝ2\R^2, the coroot of e1e_1 is 2e12 e_1, and the coroot of e1+e2e_1 + e_2 is e1+e2e_1 + e_2, since (e1+e2,e1+e2)=2(e_1 + e_2, e_1 + e_2) = 2. So Φ∨={±2e1,±2e2,±e1±e2}\Phi^\vee = \set{\pm 2e_1, \pm 2e_2, \pm e_1 \pm e_2}, a root system of type C2C_2. Non-example: in B2B_2 the vector e1e_1 is not the coroot of e1e_1, since (e1,e1)=1(e_1, e_1) = 1 and so e1∨=2e1e_1^\vee = 2e_1; a root equals its coroot only when (α,α)=2(\alpha, \alpha) = 2. Many authors see α∨\alpha^\vee instead as the linear form x↦2(x,α)/(α,α)x \mapsto 2(x, \alpha)/(\alpha, \alpha) on EE, an element of the dual space E∗E^*. In general Φ∨\Phi^\vee is a root system, the dual or inverse root system, and (α∨)∨=α(\alpha^\vee)^\vee = \alpha.
