Correlation function
Builds on Gibbs measureIsing model
Definition
Let , and let be an infinite-volume Gibbs measure for a spin system on with bounded real spins , . Write for the expectation under .
- For , the -point correlation function is .
- The truncated, or connected, two-point function is .
- If is invariant under translations, depends only on and is written .
The correlation length in the direction of the unit vector is , when this limit exists.
Remarks
Example: the one-dimensional Ising model with coupling at zero field has a unique Gibbs measure, with and . Check: write and expand; only the term containing all the bonds between and survives the sum over spins. So , which is finite for every .
Non-example: in a finite box with boundary conditions, depends on the position of and in the box, not only on . So clause 3 fails there, which is one reason to define in infinite volume.
For a fluid, the corresponding object is the pair correlation of the particle density, encoded by the radial distribution function.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
