Definition
Let be the scale factor of a Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric, with Hubble parameter , in units with . An inflationary epoch is a time interval on which the expansion accelerates: Cosmic inflation is the hypothesis that the early universe went through such an epoch before the radiation-dominated era. During this epoch grew by a very large factor.
Remarks
Equivalent forms: holds exactly when the comoving Hubble radius decreases, and exactly when the deceleration parameter satisfies . By the second Friedmann equation with , it holds exactly when , that is, for matter with , when . Example: a homogeneous scalar field with potential has and , so , and it inflates exactly while . Non-example: in the radiation era , so , and the expansion decelerates. The amount of inflation is measured by the number of e-folds . Alan Guth proposed inflation in 1981 as a solution of the horizon and flatness problems.
