Definition
Let be a set and let be a family of subsets of . Let be a function with values in the extended real number line. The function is countably additive, or σ-additive, if the following holds. For every sequence of pairwise disjoint sets in whose union is in ,
Remarks
On the power set of , the function is countably additive. The series has non-negative terms, so its sum does not depend on how the terms are grouped. On the family of subsets such that or is finite, let for finite and otherwise. This is finitely additive but not countably additive. Indeed is a disjoint union of sets in , but and . If and takes at least one finite value, then countable additivity forces : take with and for . The same definition is used for functions with values in , or a Banach space; then the series must converge.
