Covariant derivative

Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold, let E→ME \to M be a smooth vector bundle, and let ∇\nabla be a connection on EE.

  1. Let p∈Mp \in M, v∈TpMv \in T_pM, and let ss be a smooth section of EE. The covariant derivative of ss in the direction vv is ∇vs=(∇Xs)(p)\nabla_v s = (\nabla_X s)(p), where XX is any smooth vector field with Xp=vX_p = v.
  2. Let γ:I→M\gamma : I \to M be a smooth curve on an interval II. The covariant derivative along γ\gamma is the unique map DtD_t from smooth sections of EE along γ\gamma to themselves with three properties. It is ℝ\R-linear. It satisfies Dt(fV)=f′V+fDtVD_t (f V) = f' V + f D_t V for every smooth f:I→ℝf : I \to \R. And DtV(t)=∇γ′(t)sD_t V(t) = \nabla_{\gamma'(t)} s whenever V=s∘γV = s \circ \gamma for a section ss of EE.

Remarks

Clause 1 is well defined because ∇Xs\nabla_X s is C∞(M)C^\infty(M)-linear in XX, so its value at pp depends only on XpX_p. The existence and uniqueness in clause 2 follow by writing V(t)=∑iVi(t)ei(γ(t))V(t) = \sum_i V^i(t) e_i(\gamma(t)) in a local frame: then DtV=∑i(V˙i+∑jωji(γ′(t))Vj)eiD_t V = \sum_i \big(\dot V^i + \sum_j \omega^i_j(\gamma'(t)) V^j\big) e_i, where ∇ej=∑iωji⊗ei\nabla e_j = \sum_i \omega^i_j \otimes e_i. Example: for the flat connection on ℝn\R^n and E=TℝnE = T\R^n, DtV=V˙D_t V = \dot V is the ordinary derivative of the components; so Dtγ′=γ¨D_t \gamma' = \ddot \gamma is the acceleration. Non-example: on the round sphere S2⊂ℝ3S^2 \subset \R^3 with its Levi-Civita connection, Dtγ′D_t \gamma' is the tangential part of γ¨\ddot \gamma, not γ¨\ddot\gamma itself. Along a great circle γ¨\ddot \gamma is normal to the sphere, so Dtγ′=0D_t \gamma' = 0 although γ¨≠0\ddot \gamma \ne 0. A connection on TMTM extends uniquely to covariant derivatives of all tensor fields that obey the product rule for ⊗\otimes, commute with contractions and act on functions by ∇Xf=Xf\nabla_X f = X f. In index notation ∇iYk=∂iYk+ΓijkYj\nabla_i Y^k = \partial_i Y^k + \Gamma^k_{ij} Y^j, often written Yk;iY^k{}_{;i}.
