Fluid mechanics Ideal fluids Theorem
Crocco's theorem
Builds on Inviscid flowVorticity
Statement
Consider a steady, inviscid flow of a compressible fluid without body forces, with velocity , density and pressure , all smooth. Let be the temperature, the specific entropy and the specific enthalpy, related by . Let be the stagnation enthalpy and the vorticity. Then
Remarks
The steady Euler equation is . The identity and the thermodynamic relation turn it into the formula.
Example: behind a curved shock wave in a uniform supersonic stream, is still uniform but the entropy jump differs from one streamline to the next. So , and the theorem forces : a curved shock creates vorticity.
Conversely, if and are uniform, then , so the flow is either irrotational or has its vorticity parallel to the velocity.
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is the compressible counterpart of the relation behind Bernoulli's principle. In a plane flow the vorticity is perpendicular to the velocity, so uniform and force wherever . This justifies a velocity potential for such flows, and it shows where this fails, for instance downstream of curved shocks.
