Definition
Let and let be the Euclidean group of all isometries of . Each element of is a map with in the orthogonal group and , and carries the topology of . A subgroup of is a crystallographic group of dimension if:
- is a discrete subgroup of .
- The quotient space of orbits is compact.
Remarks
Example: the group of translations with . It is discrete, since distinct elements differ by a translation of length at least . The quotient is the image of the compact cube , so it is compact; it is the -dimensional torus.
Non-example: the translations of with . This group is discrete, but the quotient is an infinite cylinder, which is not compact, so clause 2 fails.
Equivalently, acts properly discontinuously on with a compact fundamental domain. Crystallographic groups of dimension are called space groups, and those of dimension are the wallpaper groups.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
