Definition
Let be a field, let be a Lie algebra over , and let be a commutative associative -algebra with unit. The current algebra of over is the tensor product with the bracket for and , extended bilinearly.
Remarks
The bracket is a Lie bracket. Antisymmetry: , using . The Jacobi identity for , , is the Jacobi identity of tensored with the single element .
Example: for one gets the algebra of polynomial maps into , often called the current algebra of . For one gets the loop algebra. Let be a smooth manifold and a real Lie algebra. The smooth maps with pointwise bracket form a current algebra of the same kind, with the smooth real functions on .
Non-example: if is not commutative, the same formula does not give a Lie algebra. For with and the matrices, take and with . Then , while , so antisymmetry fails.
