Definition
Let be a cyclic extension of degree , and let be a generator of its Galois group. Let be nonzero. The cyclic algebra is the -vector space with basis , with the multiplication determined by
Remarks
It is the crossed product algebra for the factor set if and if , for . So it is a central simple algebra over of degree , split by . It is isomorphic to if and only if is a norm from to , that is, for some .
Example: , , complex conjugation and give . Since , the number is not a norm, and is not split, as expected. With one gets .
Non-example: if is Galois but not cyclic, such as , there is no single generator , and the construction does not apply.
If the characteristic of is not , the quaternion algebra is the cyclic algebra when is not a square in .
