Definition

Let L(t,q,q˙)L(t, q, \dot q) be the Lagrangian of a Lagrangian system, written in generalized coordinates q=(q1,…,qn)q = (q_1, \ldots, q_n) on an open set of ℝn\R^n. A coordinate qkq_k is cyclic, or ignorable, if ∂L/∂qk=0\partial L / \partial q_k = 0 identically. That is, LL does not depend on qkq_k, though it may depend on q˙k\dot q_k.

Remarks

The generalized momentum conjugate to qkq_k is pk=∂L/∂q˙kp_k = \partial L / \partial \dot q_k. If qkq_k is cyclic, the kk-th Euler–Lagrange equation reads ddtpk=∂L/∂qk=0\frac{d}{dt} p_k = \partial L/\partial q_k = 0, so pkp_k is constant along every motion. Whether a coordinate is cyclic depends on the choice of coordinates: the same symmetry may be hidden in other coordinates.

Example: a particle of mass mm in the plane with a central potential, in polar coordinates, has L=12m(r˙2+r2θ˙2)−V(r)L = \tfrac12 m(\dot r^2 + r^2\dot\theta^2) - V(r). The angle θ\theta does not occur in LL, so it is cyclic, and pθ=mr2θ˙p_\theta = m r^2 \dot\theta, the angular momentum, is conserved.

Non-example: in the same Lagrangian rr is not cyclic, since ∂L/∂r=mrθ˙2−V′(r)\partial L/\partial r = m r\dot\theta^2 - V'(r) is not identically 00. In Cartesian coordinates the same Lagrangian is 12m(x˙2+y˙2)−V(x2+y2)\tfrac12 m(\dot x^2 + \dot y^2) - V(\sqrt{x^2 + y^2}), and for non-constant VV neither xx nor yy is cyclic.
