Definition
Let be real numbers and let be a bounded function. For a partition given by , let and , and form the upper and lower Darboux sums The upper and lower Darboux integrals are and . The function is Darboux integrable on if . Its Darboux integral is then this common value.
Remarks
Example: on . For the partition into equal parts, , so the two Darboux integrals agree, and the integral is .
Non-example: the Dirichlet function, equal to on rationals and on irrationals in . Every subinterval contains both kinds of numbers, so and for every , and the Darboux integrals and differ.
Riemann's criterion: is Darboux integrable if and only if for every there is a partition with . A bounded function is Darboux integrable exactly when it is Riemann integrable, with the same integral.
