Definition

Let L/KL/K be a finite Galois extension of algebraic number fields with Galois group GG, and let π’ͺKβŠ†π’ͺL\mathcal{O}_K \subseteq \mathcal{O}_L be the rings of integers. Let 𝔓\mathfrak{P} be a nonzero prime ideal of π’ͺL\mathcal{O}_L. The decomposition group of 𝔓\mathfrak{P} is the subgroup D𝔓={ΟƒβˆˆG:Οƒ(𝔓)=𝔓}.D_{\mathfrak{P}} = \set{\sigma \in G : \sigma(\mathfrak{P}) = \mathfrak{P}}. The inertia group of 𝔓\mathfrak{P} is I𝔓={ΟƒβˆˆD𝔓:Οƒ(x)≑x(mod𝔓)Β forΒ allΒ x∈π’ͺL}.I_{\mathfrak{P}} = \set{\sigma \in D_{\mathfrak{P}} : \sigma(x) \equiv x \pmod{\mathfrak{P}} \text{ for all } x \in \mathcal{O}_L}.

Remarks

Let 𝔭=π”“βˆ©π’ͺK\mathfrak{p} = \mathfrak{P} \cap \mathcal{O}_K, with ramification index ee, residue degree ff and gg primes over it, as in splitting of prime ideals. Then D𝔓D_{\mathfrak{P}} has order efef and index gg in GG. Each ΟƒβˆˆD𝔓\sigma \in D_{\mathfrak{P}} induces an automorphism of the finite field π’ͺL/𝔓\mathcal{O}_L/\mathfrak{P} over π’ͺK/𝔭\mathcal{O}_K/\mathfrak{p}; this gives a surjective homomorphism onto the Galois group of the residue extension, with kernel I𝔓I_{\mathfrak{P}}, so ∣Iπ”“βˆ£=e\abs{I_{\mathfrak{P}}} = e. For Ο„βˆˆG\tau \in G, one has DΟ„(𝔓)=Ο„Dπ”“Ο„βˆ’1D_{\tau(\mathfrak{P})} = \tau D_{\mathfrak{P}} \tau^{-1}.

Example: in β„š(i)/β„š\Q(i)/\Q, with G={1,c}G = \set{1, c} where cc is complex conjugation, take 𝔓=(3)\mathfrak{P} = (3). Then c(𝔓)=𝔓c(\mathfrak{P}) = \mathfrak{P}, so D𝔓=GD_{\mathfrak{P}} = G; and c(i)=βˆ’i≑̸i(mod3)c(i) = -i \not\equiv i \pmod 3, so I𝔓I_{\mathfrak{P}} is trivial, matching e=1e = 1, f=2f = 2.

Non-example: for 𝔓=(2+i)\mathfrak{P} = (2 + i), the element cc is not in D𝔓D_{\mathfrak{P}}, because c(𝔓)=(2βˆ’i)≠𝔓c(\mathfrak{P}) = (2 - i) \ne \mathfrak{P} (the quotient (2+i)/(2βˆ’i)(2+i)/(2-i) is not in β„€[i]\Z[i]). So D𝔓D_{\mathfrak{P}} is trivial, matching e=f=1e = f = 1 and g=2g = 2.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
