Decreasing rearrangement
Builds on Distribution function of a measurable functionInfimum
Definition
Let be a measure space and let be a real or complex measurable function on . Let be the distribution function of . The decreasing rearrangement of is the function given by the infimum with the convention .
Remarks
Example: let with Lebesgue measure and . Then for and for . For the condition means , so . For every works, so .
Non-example: the function on is not its own decreasing rearrangement, since it is increasing. A function on is its own rearrangement exactly when it is non-increasing and right-continuous.
The function is non-increasing and right-continuous. It has the same distribution function as for Lebesgue measure on . Hence for . The symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function on is a related notion: it is radial, decreasing in , and equimeasurable with .
