Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field with ring of integers π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K. For a nonzero ideal π”ž\mathfrak{a} of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K, let N(π”ž)=∣π’ͺK/π”žβˆ£N(\mathfrak{a}) = \abs{\mathcal{O}_K/\mathfrak{a}} be its norm. Let ss be a complex variable with Re⁑s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1. The Dedekind zeta function of KK is ΞΆK(s)=βˆ‘π”ž1N(π”ž)s,\zeta_K(s) = \sum_{\mathfrak{a}} \frac{1}{N(\mathfrak{a})^{s}}, where π”ž\mathfrak{a} runs over the nonzero ideals of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K.

Remarks

The series converges absolutely for Re⁑s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1. Unique factorisation of ideals gives the Euler product ΞΆK(s)=βˆπ”(1βˆ’N(𝔭)βˆ’s)βˆ’1\zeta_K(s) = \prod_{\mathfrak{p}} \big(1 - N(\mathfrak{p})^{-s}\big)^{-1} over the nonzero prime ideals 𝔭\mathfrak{p}. The function has an analytic continuation to a meromorphic function on β„‚\C whose only pole is a simple pole at s=1s = 1. Let KK have r1r_1 real embeddings, r2r_2 pairs of complex embeddings, and wKw_K roots of unity. Let hKh_K be its class number, RKR_K its regulator and dKd_K its discriminant. The residue is Res⁑s=1ΞΆK(s)=2r1(2Ο€)r2hKRKwK∣dK∣,\operatorname{Res}_{s = 1} \zeta_K(s) = \frac{2^{r_1} (2\pi)^{r_2} h_K R_K}{w_K \sqrt{\abs{d_K}}}, the class number formula.

Example: for K=β„šK = \Q every nonzero ideal is nβ„€n\Z for a unique nβ‰₯1n \ge 1, with norm nn, so ΞΆβ„š\zeta_{\Q} is the Riemann zeta function. For K=β„š(i)K = \Q(i), comparing Euler factors prime by prime gives ΞΆK(s)=ΞΆ(s)L(s,Ο‡4)\zeta_K(s) = \zeta(s) L(s, \chi_4), where L(s,Ο‡4)L(s, \chi_4) is the Dirichlet L-function of the non-trivial character modulo 44.

Non-example: the sum βˆ‘Ξ±βˆ£NK/β„š(Ξ±)βˆ£βˆ’s\sum_{\alpha} \abs{N_{K/\Q}(\alpha)}^{-s} over nonzero elements α∈π’ͺK\alpha \in \mathcal{O}_K is not ΞΆK(s)\zeta_K(s). It counts each principal ideal once for each unit, so for K=β„š(2)K = \Q(\sqrt{2}), which has infinitely many units, it diverges for every ss.
