Mechanics of deformable solids Definition
Deformation
Definition
Let be a nonempty open set, the reference configuration of a continuum body. A deformation of is a map such that:
- is continuously differentiable;
- is injective;
- for every , where is the Jacobian matrix of .
The displacement of the deformation is the map , . The set is the deformed or current configuration.
Remarks
The uniform stretch is a deformation: it is smooth, injective, and ; its displacement is . The reflection is smooth and injective but fails clause 3, since : it would turn the body inside out. Clause 3 together with the inverse function theorem makes a diffeomorphism of onto the open set . A deformation is called rigid when with a rotation matrix and .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
