Definition
Let and let be a continuous map of the -sphere. The induced homomorphism on singular homology is an endomorphism of a group isomorphic to . So for a unique integer and all . This integer is the degree of , written .
More generally, let and be closed connected oriented topological -manifolds with fundamental classes and , and let be continuous. The degree of is the integer with in .
Remarks
Homotopic maps have the same degree, and .
Example: on , the map has degree . For a reflection of in a hyperplane, ; the antipodal map is a composite of reflections, so its degree is .
Non-example: a map with has no degree in this sense, since the source and target manifolds must have the same dimension.
If is smooth and is a regular value, then , where the sign is computed in oriented charts. For , the degree of a map equals its winding number about .
