Definition
Let be a ring, let , and let . Write , using the plus construction. The Dennis trace map is the composite of four maps:
- the Hurewicz map ;
- the map for , induced on chains by ;
- the map induced by the ring map ;
- the trace isomorphism of Morita invariance.
Here is group homology and is Hochschild homology over .
Remarks
Example: in degree , a unit of gives , and its image in is the class of . For commutative, by , so the Dennis trace sends to , a logarithmic Kähler differential. Non-example of injectivity: for , one has , so the Dennis trace on is zero although is not. The Dennis trace factors through negative cyclic homology , and its topological refinement is the map .
