Definition
Let be a commutative Noetherian ring, let be an ideal of , and let be a finitely generated -module with . The -depth of , written or , is the length of a maximal -regular sequence whose elements lie in . If is a local ring, the depth of is .
Remarks
The definition makes sense because all maximal -regular sequences in have the same length, a theorem of Rees. That length is also . If , one sets . Example: for localized at , one has , with the maximal regular sequence . Example: for localized at , one has , since and , so no element of is a non-zero-divisor. For a nonzero finitely generated module over a Noetherian local ring, .
