Definition

Let XX be a Noetherian scheme, and let Coh⁡(X)\operatorname{Coh}(X) be the abelian category of coherent sheaves on XX. A chain complex F∙F^\bullet of coherent sheaves is bounded if Fi=0F^i = 0 for all but finitely many ii. Consider the category of bounded complexes in Coh⁡(X)\operatorname{Coh}(X) with chain maps. The bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of XX is the category Db(X)=Db(Coh⁡(X))D^b(X) = D^b(\operatorname{Coh}(X)) obtained from it by formally inverting all quasi-isomorphisms. It is the bounded derived category of Coh⁡(X)\operatorname{Coh}(X).

Remarks

Db(X)D^b(X) is a triangulated category with shift F∙↦F∙[1]F^\bullet \mapsto F^\bullet[1]. It is equivalent to the full subcategory of the derived category of all 𝒪X\mathcal{O}_X-modules whose objects are the complexes with coherent cohomology sheaves, nonzero in finitely many degrees. Example: for X=Spec⁡kX = \operatorname{Spec} k with kk a field, coherent sheaves are finite-dimensional vector spaces, and every object of Db(X)D^b(X) is isomorphic to ⨁iHi(F∙)[−i]\bigoplus_i H^i(F^\bullet)[-i], its cohomology placed in each degree. Non-example: on X=𝔸k1=Spec⁡k[x]X = \mathbb{A}^1_k = \operatorname{Spec} k[x], the complex k[x]→xk[x]k[x] \xrightarrow{x} k[x] in degrees −1,0-1, 0 maps to k[x]/(x)k[x]/(x) in degree 00 by a quasi-isomorphism. In the homotopy category of complexes, before quasi-isomorphisms are inverted, these two complexes are not isomorphic, since there is no nonzero map of modules k[x]/(x)→k[x]k[x]/(x) \to k[x]. In Db(X)D^b(X) they are isomorphic. Theorems on DbD^b: Beilinson showed that Db(ℙn)D^b(\mathbb{P}^n) is generated by 𝒪,𝒪(1),…,𝒪(n)\mathcal{O}, \mathcal{O}(1), \ldots, \mathcal{O}(n), and Mukai showed that an abelian variety and its dual have equivalent derived categories.
