Definition
Let and be abelian categories, and assume that every object of has an injective resolution. Let be an additive functor that is left exact. For an object of , choose an injective resolution . For , the -th right derived functor of at is the cohomology Dually, if every object has a projective resolution and is additive and right exact, the left derived functors are .
Remarks
Up to a canonical isomorphism, does not depend on the resolution, since any two injective resolutions are chain homotopy equivalent; the same argument makes a functor. Left exactness gives , and a short exact sequence in gives a long exact sequence of the . Example: let on abelian groups and , with the injective resolution . Then and , so and , which is . Non-example: the complex is exact, but is not injective, and using it in place of would give in degree instead of . In general and .
