Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let A⊆XA \subseteq X. The derived set of AA is the set A′A' of all limit points of AA. So x∈A′x \in A' if and only if every neighbourhood of xx contains a point of AA different from xx.

Remarks

The closure of AA is A‾=A∪A′\overline{A} = A \cup A'. In a T1 space, the derived set A′A' is always closed.

Example: in ℝ\R, let A={1/n:n≥1}A = \set{1/n : n \ge 1}. Each 1/n1/n has a neighbourhood that meets AA only in 1/n1/n, so 1/n∉A′1/n \notin A'. Every interval (−ε,ε)(-\varepsilon, \varepsilon) contains 1/n1/n for large nn, so 0∈A′0 \in A'. Thus A′={0}A' = \set{0}.

Example: the derived set of ℚ\Q in ℝ\R is ℝ\R, and the derived set of ℤ\Z in ℝ\R is ∅\emptyset.

Non-example: in ℝ\R, the point 22 is not in the derived set of A={2}∪[3,4]A = \set{2} \cup [3, 4]. The neighbourhood (1,5/2)(1, 5/2) of 22 contains no point of AA other than 22, so the condition fails.
