Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let PP be a finitely generated projective RR-module of constant rank nn. The determinant of PP is the RR-module det⁡P=ΛRnP\det P = \Lambda^n_R P. It is the nn-th exterior power of PP, which is the degree nn part of the exterior algebra of PP over RR.

Remarks

The module det⁡P\det P is invertible, since localizing at a prime gives Λn(R𝔭n)≅R𝔭\Lambda^n(R_\mathfrak{p}^n) \cong R_\mathfrak{p}. For finitely generated projective modules PP and QQ of constant ranks, det⁡(P⊕Q)≅det⁡P⊗Rdet⁡Q\det(P \oplus Q) \cong \det P \otimes_R \det Q. When Spec R\mathrm{Spec}\, R is connected, every finitely generated projective module has constant rank, and [P]↦[det⁡P][P] \mapsto [\det P] extends to a group homomorphism K0(R)→Pic(R)K_0(R) \to \mathrm{Pic}(R). An RR-linear map f ⁣:P→Pf \colon P \to P induces Λnf\Lambda^n f on det⁡P\det P, which is multiplication by an element det⁡f\det f of RR; for P=RnP = R^n this is the usual determinant of a matrix.

Example: det⁡Rn≅R\det R^n \cong R, generated by e1∧⋯∧ene_1 \wedge \cdots \wedge e_n for the standard basis. For a Dedekind domain RR and a nonzero ideal II, the module Rn−1⊕IR^{n-1} \oplus I has determinant R⊗(n−1)⊗RI≅IR^{\otimes (n-1)} \otimes_R I \cong I.

Non-example: the wrong degree does not give an invertible module. For P=RnP = R^n over a nonzero ring, Λn+1P=0\Lambda^{n+1} P = 0, and Λn−1P≅Rn\Lambda^{n-1} P \cong R^n is not of rank 11 when n≥2n \ge 2.
