Statement

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be an abelian category whose isomorphism classes of objects form a set. Let ℬ\mathcal{B} be a nonempty full subcategory of 𝒜\mathcal{A} that is closed under subobjects, quotient objects and finite direct sums in 𝒜\mathcal{A}. Then ℬ\mathcal{B} is abelian and the inclusion is exact. Assume that every object AA of 𝒜\mathcal{A} has a finite filtration A=A0⊇A1⊇⋯⊇Ar=0A = A_0 \supseteq A_1 \supseteq \cdots \supseteq A_r = 0 with all quotients Ai−1/AiA_{i-1}/A_i in ℬ\mathcal{B}. Then the inclusion induces an isomorphism of Grothendieck groups K0(ℬ)→K0(𝒜)K_0(\mathcal{B}) \to K_0(\mathcal{A}), with inverse [A]↦∑i=1r[Ai−1/Ai][A] \mapsto \sum_{i=1}^{r} [A_{i-1}/A_i].

Remarks

The point is that ∑i[Ai−1/Ai]∈K0(ℬ)\sum_i [A_{i-1}/A_i] \in K_0(\mathcal{B}) does not depend on the filtration. Any two such filtrations have refinements with isomorphic successive quotients, up to order, by the Schreier refinement theorem. Refining a filtration does not change the sum, because the quotients of a refinement are subquotients of quotients in ℬ\mathcal{B}. Additivity on short exact sequences comes from splicing a filtration of a subobject with a filtration of the quotient. Quillen extended the theorem to all higher K-groups.

Example: let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring, 𝒜\mathcal{A} the category of RR-modules of finite length, and ℬ\mathcal{B} the semisimple ones. A composition series is a filtration with simple quotients R/𝔪R/\mathfrak{m}, 𝔪\mathfrak{m} maximal, and K0(ℬ)K_0(\mathcal{B}) is free abelian on these simple modules. So K0(𝒜)≅⨁𝔪ℤK_0(\mathcal{A}) \cong \bigoplus_{\mathfrak{m}} \Z, and the class of a module records how often each R/𝔪R/\mathfrak{m} occurs in a composition series. For a local Artinian ring RR with residue field kk, this gives G0(R)≅ℤG_0(R) \cong \Z, generated by [k][k], and [M][M] is the length of MM.

The filtration hypothesis is necessary. For 𝒜\mathcal{A} the finitely generated abelian groups and ℬ\mathcal{B} the finite ones, ℤ\Z has no such filtration. The map K0(ℬ)→K0(𝒜)K_0(\mathcal{B}) \to K_0(\mathcal{A}) is zero, but K0(ℬ)≅⨁pℤK_0(\mathcal{B}) \cong \bigoplus_p \Z over the primes pp is not.

Going deeper

For a student

Dévissage is a basic tool for computing GG-theory. For a Noetherian ring RR and an ideal II, every finitely generated module killed by a power of II has a filtration with quotients killed by II, which are R/IR/I-modules. So the K0K_0 of finitely generated modules supported on V(I)V(I) is G0(R/I)G_0(R/I). Combined with the localization sequence G0(R/I)→G0(R)→G0(R[s−1])→0G_0(R/I) \to G_0(R) \to G_0(R[s^{-1}]) \to 0 for I=(s)I = (s), it lets one compute GG-groups by cutting a ring into simpler pieces.
