Statement

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be a small abelian category, and let ℬ\mathcal{B} be a nonempty full subcategory of 𝒜\mathcal{A}. Assume that ℬ\mathcal{B} is closed under subobjects, quotient objects and finite direct sums in 𝒜\mathcal{A}. Assume that every object MM of 𝒜\mathcal{A} has a finite filtration 0=M0⊆M1⊆⋯⊆Mr=M0 = M_0 \subseteq M_1 \subseteq \cdots \subseteq M_r = M with Mi/Mi−1M_i / M_{i-1} in ℬ\mathcal{B} for 1≤i≤r1 \le i \le r. Then ℬ\mathcal{B} is abelian, and the inclusion ℬ→𝒜\mathcal{B} \to \mathcal{A} induces isomorphisms Kn(ℬ)→Kn(𝒜)K_n(\mathcal{B}) \to K_n(\mathcal{A}) of Quillen K-groups for all n≥0n \ge 0.

Remarks

Quillen proved it with his Theorem A, applied to Qℬ→Q𝒜Q\mathcal{B} \to Q\mathcal{A} for the Q-construction: the filtrations show that the relevant comma categories are contractible. In degree 00 the statement is elementary: the filtration writes [M]=∑i[Mi/Mi−1][M] = \sum_i [M_i/M_{i-1}] in K0(𝒜)K_0(\mathcal{A}). This degree-00 case is the classical dévissage theorem for K0K_0.

Example: let RR be a left Noetherian ring and II a nilpotent two-sided ideal, Im=0I^m = 0. Take for 𝒜\mathcal{A} the finitely generated left RR-modules and for ℬ\mathcal{B} those killed by II, which are the finitely generated R/IR/I-modules. Each MM has the filtration 0=ImM⊆Im−1M⊆⋯⊆IM⊆M0 = I^m M \subseteq I^{m-1} M \subseteq \cdots \subseteq I M \subseteq M, whose quotients are killed by II. So Gn(R/I)≅Gn(R)G_n(R/I) \cong G_n(R) in G-theory. In the same way, the finite abelian pp-groups have the same K-groups as the finite field 𝔽p\mathbb{F}_p.

The filtration hypothesis cannot be dropped. For 𝒜\mathcal{A} the finite abelian groups and ℬ\mathcal{B} the finite abelian 22-groups, K0(ℬ)≅ℤK_0(\mathcal{B}) \cong \Z, but K0(𝒜)K_0(\mathcal{A}) is free abelian on the classes [ℤ/p][\Z/p], one for each prime pp.

Going deeper

For a student

Dévissage is one of the three structural theorems Quillen derived from the Q-construction, with the resolution theorem and the localization theorem. A typical use concerns a Noetherian scheme XX with a closed subscheme ZZ. The coherent sheaves on XX supported on ZZ have the same K-theory as the coherent sheaves on ZZ. This is how the first term of the localization sequence in G-theory is identified with Gn(Z)G_n(Z).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
