Definition
Let be a division ring, let be its group of nonzero elements, and let be its abelianisation. Let and let be the general linear group. The Dieudonné determinant is the unique group homomorphism such that:
- is trivial on the elementary subgroup ;
- is the class of for every .
Remarks
Such a homomorphism exists, by Dieudonné's theorem, and it is unique because is generated by and the matrices . For a diagonal matrix, is the class of . For and , is the class of ; for it is the class of . Example: if is a field, then and the Dieudonné determinant is the usual determinant. Non-example: over the quaternions , the map is not multiplicative, so it is not the Dieudonné determinant; the order of the factors matters. For the kernel of is , and induces an isomorphism .
