Difference set

Builds on GroupSubset

Definition

Let GG be a finite group of order vv with identity ee, and let kk and λ\lambda be positive integers. A (v,k,λ)(v, k, \lambda) difference set in GG is a subset D⊆GD \subseteq G with kk elements with the following property. Each element g≠eg \ne e of GG can be written as g=d1d2−1g = d_1 d_2^{-1} with d1,d2∈Dd_1, d_2 \in D in exactly λ\lambda ways.

Remarks

When GG is abelian and written additively, the condition is about differences d1−d2d_1 - d_2. Counting the k(k−1)k(k - 1) pairs (d1,d2)(d_1, d_2) with d1≠d2d_1 \ne d_2 gives k(k−1)=λ(v−1)k(k-1) = \lambda (v - 1). Example: D={1,2,4}D = \set{1, 2, 4} in ℤ/7ℤ\Z/7\Z. The six differences are 2−1=12 - 1 = 1, 1−2=61 - 2 = 6, 4−1=34 - 1 = 3, 1−4=41 - 4 = 4, 4−2=24 - 2 = 2, 2−4=52 - 4 = 5, so each nonzero residue occurs once, and DD is a (7,3,1)(7, 3, 1) difference set. Non-example: D={0,1,2}D = \set{0, 1, 2} in ℤ/7ℤ\Z/7\Z is not a difference set, since 1=1−0=2−11 = 1 - 0 = 2 - 1 occurs twice while 33 does not occur. If DD is a (v,k,λ)(v, k, \lambda) difference set with k<vk < v, the translates Dg={dg:d∈D}Dg = \set{dg : d \in D} for g∈Gg \in G are the blocks of a symmetric 22-(v,k,λ)(v, k, \lambda) block design.
