Block design
Builds on Finite setFamily of sets
Definition
Let be positive integers with . A - design is a pair such that:
- is a finite set with elements, called points.
- is a finite family of subsets of , called blocks, each with exactly elements.
- Each subset of with exactly elements is contained in exactly blocks.
A balanced incomplete block design, or -design, is a - design.
Remarks
The family may contain a block more than once. The design is simple if it has no repeated block. In a - design with blocks, each point lies in the same number of blocks, and and . Example: let and let the blocks be , , , , , , . Each of the pairs of points lies in exactly one of these blocks, so this is a - design, the Fano plane. Here each point lies in blocks, and . Non-example: on the blocks and do not form a -design, because the pair lies in two blocks and the pair lies in none. A - design is a Steiner system .
