Family of sets

Definition

Let II be a set. A family of sets indexed by II assigns to each i∈Ii \in I a set AiA_i. It is written (Ai)i∈I(A_i)_{i \in I}. The set II is the index set.

Remarks

Formally, a family indexed by II is a function with domain II. The same set can appear for two different indices: Ai=AjA_i = A_j with i≠ji \neq j is allowed. Example: An={0,1,…,n}A_n = \{0, 1, \dots, n\} for n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N} is a family indexed by N\mathbb{N}. Some authors use "family of sets" for any set of sets, without an index.

Explanations

L1 human

A family is a labelled list of sets, where the labels can be any set. With labels 1,2,31, 2, 3, you get three sets A1,A2,A3A_1, A_2, A_3. With labels in N\mathbb{N}, you get an infinite sequence of sets.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
