Dimension of a polynomial ring

Builds on Krull dimensionPolynomial ringNoetherian ringPrime idealCommutative ring

Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring of finite Krull dimension dim⁡R\dim R, and let R[X]R[X] be the polynomial ring in one variable over RR.

  1. In general, dim⁡R+1≤dim⁡R[X]≤2dim⁡R+1\dim R + 1 \le \dim R[X] \le 2 \dim R + 1.
  2. If RR is a Noetherian ring, then dim⁡R[X]=dim⁡R+1\dim R[X] = \dim R + 1.

Remarks

For the lower bound, a chain of prime ideals 𝔭0⊊⋯⊊𝔭n\mathfrak p_0 \subsetneq \cdots \subsetneq \mathfrak p_n of RR gives the chain 𝔭0[X]⊊⋯⊊𝔭n[X]⊊𝔭n[X]+(X)\mathfrak p_0[X] \subsetneq \cdots \subsetneq \mathfrak p_n[X] \subsetneq \mathfrak p_n[X] + (X) in R[X]R[X]. For the upper bound, fix a prime 𝔭\mathfrak p of RR and let κ(𝔭)\kappa(\mathfrak p) be the fraction field of R/𝔭R/\mathfrak p. The primes of R[X]R[X] that contract to 𝔭\mathfrak p correspond to primes of κ(𝔭)[X]\kappa(\mathfrak p)[X], so at most two of them lie in one chain. In the Noetherian case one shows that a prime 𝔓\mathfrak P of R[X]R[X] over 𝔭\mathfrak p has height at most ht⁡𝔭+1\operatorname{ht} \mathfrak p + 1. By induction, for a field kk the ring k[X1,…,Xn]k[X_1, \dots, X_n] has dimension nn, and for a Noetherian ring RR of finite dimension, dim⁡R[X1,…,Xn]=dim⁡R+n\dim R[X_1, \dots, X_n] = \dim R + n. For example, dim⁡ℤ[X]=2\dim \Z[X] = 2, with the maximal chain 0⊊(2)⊊(2,X)0 \subsetneq (2) \subsetneq (2, X). Without the Noetherian hypothesis the equality in clause 2 can fail: there are non-Noetherian rings with dim⁡R[X]>dim⁡R+1\dim R[X] > \dim R + 1.

Going deeper

For a student

This result is the algebraic reason why affine nn-space over a field has dimension nn. Together with Noether normalization it shows that a finitely generated domain over a field has dimension equal to the transcendence degree of its fraction field. The general bounds come from looking at the fibres of Spec⁡R[X]→Spec⁡R\operatorname{Spec} R[X] \to \operatorname{Spec} R, which are spectra of polynomial rings in one variable over fields.
