Statement

Let kk be a field and let AA be a nonzero finitely generated kk-algebra. Then there are an integer d≥0d \ge 0 and elements y1,…,yd∈Ay_1, \ldots, y_d \in A such that:

  1. y1,…,ydy_1, \ldots, y_d are algebraically independent over kk, so the subalgebra k[y1,…,yd]k[y_1, \ldots, y_d] is a polynomial ring in dd variables.
  2. AA is a finite k[y1,…,yd]k[y_1, \ldots, y_d]-algebra, that is, a finitely generated module over it.

Remarks

The proof is by induction on the number of generators of AA. Suppose the generators x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n satisfy a nonzero polynomial relation. The substitution xi′=xi−xnrix_i' = x_i - x_n^{r^i} for i<ni < n, with rr large, turns the relation into one that is monic in xnx_n up to a nonzero constant. Then AA is finite over k[x1′,…,xn−1′]k[x_1', \ldots, x_{n-1}'], and one continues with this smaller algebra. When kk is infinite, linear substitutions xi′=xi−cixnx_i' = x_i - c_i x_n with suitable ci∈kc_i \in k suffice.

The number dd is the Krull dimension of AA, by going-up and incomparability. When AA is a domain, dd is also the transcendence degree of its field of fractions over kk.

Example: let A=k[x,y]/(xy−1)A = k[x, y]/(xy - 1) and t=x+yt = x + y. In AA, x(t−x)=xy=1x(t - x) = xy = 1, so x2−tx+1=0x^2 - t x + 1 = 0 and likewise for yy; hence AA is generated by 11 and xx as a k[t]k[t]-module. The element tt is transcendental over kk, since AA is not finite-dimensional over kk, so d=1d = 1. Note that xx alone does not work: A=k[x,x−1]A = k[x, x^{-1}] is not finite over k[x]k[x].

For a student

Noether normalization is the main tool to compute the dimension of finitely generated algebras over a field and to prove that it equals the transcendence degree. It gives a short proof of Zariski's lemma and hence of the weak Nullstellensatz. If AA is a field, then k[y1,…,yd]k[y_1, \ldots, y_d] is a field by integral extensions of fields, so d=0d = 0. It is also used to show that finitely generated domains over a field are catenary.
