Commutative algebra Integral extensions Theorem
Going-up theorem
Statement
Let be commutative rings with integral over . Let be prime ideals of , and let be a prime ideal of with . Then there is a prime ideal of with and .
Remarks
The ring is integral over its subring . The lying over theorem gives a prime of over , and its preimage in is .
By induction, every chain of primes of lifts to a chain of primes of with . So the Krull dimension of is at least that of .
Example: for , the chain lifts to .
Integrality is needed: for , the prime lies under , but no prime of lies over , since is a unit there.
Going deeper
For a student
Going-up and incomparability together give for every integral extension . This is the key step in computing the dimension of a finitely generated algebra over a field through Noether normalization. The companion result in the other direction, going-down, needs extra hypotheses.
