Commutative algebra Integral extensions Theorem
Incomparability theorem
Builds on Integral extensionPrime idealIntegral extensions of fields
Statement
Let be commutative rings with integral over . Let be prime ideals of with . Then .
Remarks
Let and localize at . Then is a domain integral over the field , so it is a field by integral extensions of fields. Hence is maximal, and the larger prime must equal it, which gives .
A consequence: a prime of is maximal if and only if is maximal in .
Example: in , the primes contract to and , which differ, as the theorem demands.
Integrality is needed: for , the primes both contract to .
Going deeper
For a student
Incomparability says that chains of primes cannot get longer when one passes to an integral extension. With going-up it gives . It is also the reason that the maximal ideals of are exactly the primes over maximal ideals of .
