Commutative algebra Integral extensions Proposition
Integral extensions of fields
Builds on Integral extensionIntegral domainField
Statement
Let be integral domains with integral over . Then is a field if and only if is a field.
Remarks
Suppose is a field and let be nonzero. Take a monic relation of least degree; since is a domain, . Then lies in . Conversely, suppose is a field and let be nonzero. Then is integral over , say , and multiplying by gives .
Example: is integral and both are fields; is integral and neither is a field.
The hypothesis that is a domain is needed for " field implies field": the ring is integral over the field , but it is not a field.

For a student
This is the step that links maximal ideals across an integral extension: for a prime of , apply it to . It gives that is maximal if and only if is maximal, and it is used in the proofs of lying over, incomparability and Zariski's lemma.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
