Commutative algebra Integral extensions Lemma

Zariski's lemma

Builds on FieldFinite type algebraFinite extension

Statement

Let kk be a field and let KK be a field extension of kk that is finitely generated as a kk-algebra. Then KK is a finite extension of kk.

Remarks

By Noether normalization, KK is finite over a polynomial ring k[y1,…,yd]k[y_1, \ldots, y_d]. By integral extensions of fields, k[y1,…,yd]k[y_1, \ldots, y_d] is then a field, which forces d=0d = 0, since y1y_1 has no inverse in a polynomial ring when d≥1d \ge 1. So KK is finite over kk. Another proof uses the Artin–Tate lemma.

Example: ℚ(2)=ℚ[2]\Q(\sqrt{2}) = \Q[\sqrt{2}] is a field generated by one element as a ℚ\Q-algebra, and it is finite over ℚ\Q of degree 22.

The lemma is about generation as an algebra. The field k(t)k(t) of rational functions is generated by tt as a field, but it is not a finitely generated kk-algebra, and it is not finite over kk.

For a student

Zariski's lemma is the algebraic core of the weak Nullstellensatz. If 𝔪\mathfrak{m} is a maximal ideal of k[x1,…,xn]k[x_1, \ldots, x_n], then k[x1,…,xn]/𝔪k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]/\mathfrak{m} is a field finitely generated as a kk-algebra, so it is finite over kk. When kk is algebraically closed, this residue field is kk itself, and 𝔪\mathfrak{m} is the ideal of a point.
