Statement

Let A⊆B⊆CA \subseteq B \subseteq C be commutative rings with AA a Noetherian ring. Suppose that CC is a finitely generated AA-algebra and that CC is a finitely generated BB-module. Then BB is a finitely generated AA-algebra.

Remarks

Let x1,…,xmx_1, \ldots, x_m generate CC as an AA-algebra and y1,…,yny_1, \ldots, y_n generate CC as a BB-module. Write xi=∑jbijyjx_i = \sum_j b_{ij} y_j and yiyj=∑lbijlyly_i y_j = \sum_l b_{ijl} y_l with bij,bijl∈Bb_{ij}, b_{ijl} \in B. Let B0B_0 be the AA-algebra generated by all bijb_{ij} and bijlb_{ijl}; it is Noetherian by Hilbert's basis theorem, and CC is a finitely generated B0B_0-module. Then BB is a B0B_0-submodule of CC, hence finitely generated as a module over the Noetherian ring B0B_0, so BB is of finite type over AA.

Example: let A=kA = k be a field, C=k[x]C = k[x] and B=k[x2]B = k[x^2]; then CC is generated by 11 and xx as a BB-module, and indeed BB is generated by x2x^2 as a kk-algebra.

For a student

The lemma gives a short proof of Zariski's lemma. Suppose a field KK is a finitely generated kk-algebra but not finite over kk, and choose a transcendence basis t1,…,trt_1, \ldots, t_r with r≥1r \ge 1. Then KK is finite over k(t1,…,tr)k(t_1, \ldots, t_r), and the lemma would make k(t1,…,tr)k(t_1, \ldots, t_r) a finitely generated kk-algebra, which is impossible. The same idea shows that rings of invariants of finite groups acting on finitely generated algebras over a field are finitely generated.
