Statement

Let AโІBA \subseteq B be integral domains such that AA is integrally closed and BB is integral over AA. Let ๐”ญ1โЇ๐”ญ2\mathfrak{p}_1 \supseteq \mathfrak{p}_2 be prime ideals of AA, and let ๐”ฎ1\mathfrak{q}_1 be a prime ideal of BB with ๐”ฎ1โˆฉA=๐”ญ1\mathfrak{q}_1 \cap A = \mathfrak{p}_1. Then there is a prime ideal ๐”ฎ2\mathfrak{q}_2 of BB with ๐”ฎ2โІ๐”ฎ1\mathfrak{q}_2 \subseteq \mathfrak{q}_1 and ๐”ฎ2โˆฉA=๐”ญ2\mathfrak{q}_2 \cap A = \mathfrak{p}_2.

Remarks

The proof shows that ๐”ญ2B๐”ฎ1โˆฉA=๐”ญ2\mathfrak{p}_2 B_{\mathfrak{q}_1} \cap A = \mathfrak{p}_2; a prime of B๐”ฎ1B_{\mathfrak{q}_1} over ๐”ญ2\mathfrak{p}_2 then exists, and it contracts to the wanted ๐”ฎ2\mathfrak{q}_2 in BB. The key step uses that AA is integrally closed. If an element of BB is integral over the ideal ๐”ญ2\mathfrak{p}_2, then the coefficients of its minimal polynomial over the fraction field of AA lie in ๐”ญ2\mathfrak{p}_2. Here one also uses that BB is a domain, so that nonzero elements of AA are not zero divisors on BB.

Example: โ„คโІโ„ค[i]\Z \subseteq \Z[i] satisfies the hypotheses, and for ๐”ญ1=5โ„คโЇ๐”ญ2=0\mathfrak{p}_1 = 5\Z \supseteq \mathfrak{p}_2 = 0 and ๐”ฎ1=(2+i)\mathfrak{q}_1 = (2 + i), the prime ๐”ฎ2=0\mathfrak{q}_2 = 0 works.

The hypothesis that AA is integrally closed cannot be dropped: there are integral extensions of domains in which going-down fails. A different sufficient condition is flatness: going-down holds for every flat ring extension.

Going deeper

For a student

Going-down is used to prove that heights behave well in integral extensions over a normal base: htโก๐”ฎ=htโก(๐”ฎโˆฉA)\operatorname{ht} \mathfrak{q} = \operatorname{ht}(\mathfrak{q} \cap A) for every prime ๐”ฎ\mathfrak{q} of BB. It is a key ingredient in dimension theory of finitely generated algebras over a field, for example to show that such domains are catenary. In geometry it gives that a finite surjective map from an irreducible variety onto a normal variety is an open map.
